What is the Feldenkrais Method®?

The Feldenkrais Method® uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of living the life they want. You can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life, these improvements will often enhance your thinking, emotional regulation, and problem-solving capabilities.


The Feldenkrais Method® is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais said: “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity, the Feldenkrais Method® assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently, and comfortably.

 

BIOGRAPHY OF MOSHE FELDENKRAIS

(1904-1984)

Moshe Feldenkrais was born in Russia and immigrated to Israel in his early teens. He was an engineer, physicist, martial artist, founder of the Feldenkrais Method® and author.


In 1942 he suffered a series of sports related injuries and decided against surgery as the odds were not good for restoring his lost function. Alternately, he sought to explore healing himself through applying his knowledge of physics and studying neurology, anatomy, biomechanics, and human movement development. After 2 years of research and experimentation, he succeeded in completely restoring his ability to walk. He found a way to link the brain and the nervous system to improve his physical function.


In continuing to explore his success, he developed hundreds of unique exercises, later called Awareness Through Movement® exercises, that were designed to access the movement learning centers of the brain. He worked on friends and colleagues treating a garden variety of muscle skeletal problems and even serious neurological disorders.


Moshe Feldenkrais left physics in 1954 as the demand for his work increased and dedicated himself to helping others improve their health. He taught internationally and trained a small group of practitioners to continue his work before his death at age 80.
