What is the Feldenkrais Method®?

The Feldenkrais Method® uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of living the life they want. You can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life, these improvements will often enhance your thinking, emotional regulation, and problem-solving capabilities.

The Feldenkrais Method® is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais said: “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity, the Feldenkrais Method® assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently, and comfortably.

Moshe Feldenkrais was born in Russia and immigrated to Israel in his early teens. He was an engineer, physicist, martial artist, founder of the Feldenkrais Method® and author.

In 1942 he suffered a series of sports related injuries and decided against surgery as the odds were not good for restoring his lost function. Alternately, he sought to explore healing himself through applying his knowledge of physics and studying neurology, anatomy, biomechanics, and human movement development. After 2 years of research and experimentation, he succeeded in completely restoring his ability to walk. He found a way to link the brain and the nervous system to improve his physical function.

In continuing to explore his success, he developed hundreds of unique exercises, later called Awareness Through Movement® exercises, that were designed to access the movement learning centers of the brain. He worked on friends and colleagues treating a garden variety of muscle skeletal problems and even serious neurological disorders.

Moshe Feldenkrais left physics in 1954 as the demand for his work increased and dedicated himself to helping others improve their health. He taught internationally and trained a small group of practitioners to continue his work before his death at age 80.

“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself”

Janin Gunderman

Feldenkrais Practitioner

Janin graduated from the Professional Feldenkrais Training Program in 2013 and has worked as a Feldenkrais Practitioner with the Feldenkrais Foundation and Feldenkrais Institute and currently for Physical Therapy & Feldenkrais® NYC and now in her own practice in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

“Janin’s hands are magical. I have arthritis with reduced range of motion in my right leg and left arm. Janin identified the source of the problem in the hip and shoulder (not arm and leg) and helped me learn how to release the tightness in these joints. It is amazing. I grew taller (not that I needed to), walk more fluidly, and feel better. I have better posture (without trying to stand up straight), and I know when I am moving efficiently. I had forgotten what it felt like to walk and sit with alignment, and consequently, I fell into some harmful patterns. The work with Janin has helped me to understand the way my body moves and to feel what easy movement feels like. Sometimes when she is working, her hands heat up, and the warmth from her hands helps my body align. I worked with five clinicians before Janin, and I think that she is a fantastic clinician!”

Leon Felder, NYC

“I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis 5 or 6 years ago. In that time I have pursued a number of forms of care, cure, pain relief from physical therapy to Pilates. The only treatment that I have found that offers me any pain relief and hope for improved functioning is Feldenkrais. The only practitioner of Feldenkrais with whom I have had success is Janin. In over a year, she has relieved my symptoms, given me work to do on my own that keeps me going from day to day and her support inspires me to work toward a more pain free life. I am encouraged by her knowledge, her physical touch and the warmth of her care. If you can book a session with Janin – it is truly life changing.”

“Awareness Through Movement with Janin Gunderman has significantly decreased my chronic sciatica and lower back pain. I move more easily, have a better alignment with my spine, and now go for long periods without discomfort. Janin is very special – kind, patient, with good sense of humor, and has the best hands. Although Feldenkrais takes patience, the results are well worth it!”
